OCTOBER winds, golden leaves and clouded mountains dominate the landscape of Rùm. The rutting of wild red deer echoes across Kinloch Village and with this change in seasons comes dreich island days. Avoiding the walls of rain that inevitably await those that venture out is a challenge. However, on Rùm, many would choose the rain over midges any day of the week. Or even better, a #RumFromRùm.

Dreich and Stormy is our seasonal drink of choice. It has been savoured many times in the Rùm Bunkhouse and Harbour BBQ Hut while sat by the wood-burning fire, avoiding the wet. The aptly-named Dreich and Stormy was created by Abi, a friend of Askival, who likened its hazy look to the dreich weather that so often settles in the Hebrides at this time of year. Simple to make, smooth to drink. A perfect serve of Askival on a not-so-perfect day. A version that brings out the flavours of botanicals found on the Isle of Rùm’s glens, forests and coastline.

Ingredients:

50ml Askival rum

Four dashes of Angostura Bitters

5ml orange oleo (strained orange zest oil)

@fevertreemixers Ginger Ale

Steps:

Fill a tall glass with cubed ice and assemble all the ingredients. Pour in your Askival, followed by the bitters and orange oleo. Finish by topping your glass up with Fever Tree Ginger Ale. Enjoy by the fire. It is as simple as the rain soaking you through.
