Air China Cargo’s decision to establish its UK cargo hub at Glasgow Prestwick Airport is set to deliver a major boost for Scotland’s celebrated food and whisky sectors, opening up direct and efficient export routes to the vast Chinese market.

With this new hub, Scottish exporters of premium goods – particularly seafood, fresh produce, and whisky – will benefit from faster, more reliable air freight links to China.

The move is expected to streamline supply chains, reduce transit times, and ensure that iconic Scottish products reach Asian consumers at their freshest and finest.

Supporting Scotland’s Larder

Prestwick’s enhanced cargo capabilities will make it easier for producers to meet growing demand from China for authentic Scottish fare.

From prized salmon and shellfish to award-winning cheeses and world-famous single malts, Scottish food and drink will now have a more direct route to one of the world’s largest and most dynamic markets.

The new Air China Cargo hub is poised to:

  • Increase export volumes of Scottish food and whisky
  • Support local producers in expanding their international reach
  • Attract further investment into Scotland’s food and drink sector

Ian Forgie, chief executive at Prestwick Airport, said: “This really is an endorsement of Prestwick’s exceptional cargo handling capabilities and the service that our team deliver.”

“We are excited to see the possibilities for Scottish exporters as we hope the return flights will become a strong trade lane between Scotland and Greater China and an alternative cargo gateway to and from the UK.”

This development not only strengthens Scotland’s reputation as a global larder but also promises to deliver significant economic benefits to the region.

As Air China Cargo ramps up operations at Prestwick, Scotland’s larder is set to take centre stage on the international export scene – bringing the best of Scottish food and whisky to tables across China.
