The Crab & Lobster Fish Shack in South Queensferry marked its first anniversary in fitting style, coinciding with National Fish & Chip Day on Friday 5 June.

The celebratory event saw staff donning red bucket hats emblazoned with the National Fish & Chip Day logo, while young footballers from local teams KSQ Galaxy and Rapids showcased their skills in the restaurant’s car park, entertaining visitors throughout the day.

Alongside the festivities, the restaurant used the occasion to raise funds for its adopted charity, Cash for Kids’ Holiday Hunger campaign, which supports children and young people facing food insecurity during school holidays.

Owner Bryan Coghill said the milestone provided the perfect opportunity to give back. “This special day, which also happened to be our first anniversary, was an ideal opportunity to raise more money for Cash for Kids,” he explained. “We want to make a strong contribution to the Holiday Hunger initiative, which supports young people up to the age of 18 who may not have access to free school meals and other support available during term time.”

Customers were encouraged to donate by “buying” an invisible fish supper, with contributions made via an online fundraising page or by scanning QR codes available in the restaurant. As an added incentive, donors were entered into a prize draw to win two free fish suppers each month for a year.

“The weather was kind to us, and we were able to host a fun event in the car park, with Galaxy and Rapids players taking part in a ‘bucket goal’ challenge,” Coghill added.

A highlight of the day was filming with That’s TV Lothian, where reporter Rachel went behind the scenes to capture how the team creates its signature dishes. “Fish and chips remain the nation’s favourite, which is exactly what National Fish & Chip Day is all about,” said Coghill. “It’s a science to cook them perfectly.”

Rather than a traditional birthday cake, the team marked the occasion with a specially created Birthday Sundae, which proved popular with customers and showcased the venue’s broader menu offering.

“Overall, it was a brilliant day,” Coghill said. “We’d like to thank everyone who came along, made a donation, or joined in the football fun. While fish and chips will always be the star of the show, it’s our customers who are at the heart of everything we do.”
