Iconic Scottish bakery’s coveted all-butter offering returns amidst a rapidly expanding global market for luxury festive countdowns, reinforcing its heritage and export prowess.
Walker’s Shortbread, the renowned Scottish bakery, has confirmed the highly anticipated return of its limited-edition Advent Calendar for Christmas 2026, following three consecutive years of selling out. This offering positions itself as a luxurious, all-butter alternative to traditional chocolate countdowns, catering to a burgeoning consumer demand for premium festive treats.
The global advent calendar market is experiencing significant expansion, having been valued at an estimated $3.8 billion in 2025 and projected to reach $7.2 billion by 2034, demonstrating a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.4% over the 2026-2034 forecast period. A key driver of this growth is the diversification beyond traditional confectionery, with non-chocolate categories, including premium food items, accounting for an increasing share of total market revenue. The adult segment, in particular, has surged, now representing a substantial portion of the market. Research from 2025 indicates that almost half of UK consumers (48%) planned to purchase an advent calendar, with a notable 10% comfortable spending between £20 and £50, reflecting a growing appetite for premium options. Walker’s 2026 Advent Calendar, priced at £20.00, is strategically positioned within this key spending bracket.
Designed to evoke Scottish heritage, the 2026 calendar opens like a book and is self-standing, making it a charming addition to any festive display. This year’s edition features a new illustration of Santa Claus adorned in a Walker’s tartan suit, poised to deliver gifts. Inside, a heartwarming scene of a family celebrating Christmas by a fire, sharing gifts and shortbread, is revealed. Each of the 24 windows contains a different all-butter treat, including classic Shortbread Fingers, Hearts, Mini Chocolate Chip Shortbread, Salted Caramel Squares, Rounds, and a Shortbread Star.
Bryony Walker, Commercial Director at Walker’s Shortbread, commented on the refreshed offering, stating: “We wanted to bring a fresh touch of festive magic to this year’s calendar with our updated design. It offers a truly special way to count down to Christmas Day. Sharing a piece of our 128-year-old family tradition is incredibly important to us, and we love knowing that our shortbread provides a daily moment of delight throughout December.”
Founded by Joseph Walker in Aberlour, Speyside, in 1898, Walker’s Shortbread remains an independent, family-run business now led by the founder’s great-grandchildren. The company has steadfastly maintained its commitment to traditional recipes, crafting its shortbread in the heart of the Scottish Highlands using only four high-quality ingredients: pure creamery butter, flour, sugar, and a pinch of salt. This dedication to quality has cemented Walker’s global reputation and its status as a leading UK food exporter, reaching nearly 100 markets worldwide. The company employs over 1,200 people across its six factories in the Scottish Highlands, making it a significant regional employer.

The brand’s distinguished legacy also includes multiple Royal Warrants. In 2024, Walker’s Shortbread was granted a Royal Warrant of Appointment from His Majesty King Charles III for the supply of shortbread and oatcakes to the Royal Household. This builds on previous warrants from the late Queen Elizabeth II (for oatcakes in 2002 and shortbread in 2017) and the Queen Mother (for oatcakes in 2002). Furthermore, the company was awarded The King’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade 2026, marking its fifth recognition for export excellence, having previously secured four Queen’s Awards for Export Achievement in 1984, 1988, 1999, and 2010. In 2026, 76 businesses were recognised in the International Trade category of The King’s Awards for Enterprise.
The tradition of shortbread itself holds deep cultural significance in Scotland, dating back to the 12th century and popularised in the 16th century by Mary, Queen of Scots. Historically a luxury enjoyed on special occasions like Christmas and Hogmanay, shortbread continues to be a cherished part of festive celebrations. The continued evolution of the advent calendar, from its 19th-century German origins among Lutheran communities to a modern, diversified retail phenomenon, highlights its enduring appeal as a cherished part of the Christmas countdown. The first commercially printed advent calendars appeared in the early 1900s, designed by German publisher Gerhard Lang.
The Walker’s 2026 Advent Calendar will be available from October, retailing at £20.00, through selected retailers and directly from the Walker’s Shortbread website.
