Maitland “Mac” Mackie, one of Scotland’s most prominent rural entrepreneurs, has been awarded an OBE in the King’s Birthday Honours List 2026 in recognition of his services to farming, business innovation and sustainability.
The honour comes in a landmark year for Mackie’s of Scotland, as the family-owned business celebrates 40 years of ice cream production.
Mac, who took over as Managing Director in 1998, has led the transformation of the Aberdeenshire farm from a traditional dairy operation into one of the UK’s most successful premium ice cream producers. The company now produces more than 15 million tubs annually, while maintaining its strong focus on quality, sustainability and its farming roots.
Under his leadership, Mackie’s has become widely recognised for its pioneering approach to sustainable food production. The business is currently the best-selling ice cream brand in Scotland by volume (WorldPanel, Premium Ice Cream) and has been the fastest-growing ice cream brand in the UK for the past four consecutive years.
Building on the foundations established by his father, Mac has driven a long-term commitment to sustainability. Mackie’s now generates more than twice the energy it consumes through its wind turbines and solar farm, positioning the business as a leader in renewable-powered food production.
The company has also invested heavily in adapting its rural operations for modern demands. This includes expanding on-site production facilities, introducing packaging manufacturing to reduce transport miles, and installing low-carbon refrigeration systems that enhance product quality while cutting emissions.
Speaking about the award, Maitland Mackie OBE, Chairman of Mackie’s of Scotland, said: “This honour is a tremendous privilege and one that reflects the efforts of many people over many years. What the business and farm have achieved has only been possible because of the dedication of our customers, colleagues and family, who have supported us throughout the journey.
“We have always believed in building a business for the long term, producing quality products, supporting our community and taking responsibility for the environment around us. I am proud of what has been achieved and excited about what comes next.”

Now serving as Chairman since 2023, Mac is focused on the long-term development of the business. Earlier this year, Mackie’s acquired a 50,000 sq ft distribution facility in Kintore, marking the start of a new phase of growth.
As it celebrates four decades of ice cream production, Mackie’s of Scotland continues to invest in sustainability, product development and rural enterprise, reinforcing its position at the forefront of Scotland’s food and drink sector.
