AN Edinburgh-based drinks company has appointed a new Director as it seeks to expand and innovate the tequila market.
Savora Drinks is a brand of premium tequila mixers which have been formulated to complement the spirit and challenge perceptions that it’s simply a cheap shot to be thrown back in nightclubs.
As part of its mission to break new ground, Savora has enlisted the expertise of Gregor Sey, the entrepreneur behind online cocktail masterclass provider Boozy Events. Gregor is taking on a director role after crossing paths with Savora Drinks’ co-founder Matthew Walker when they were shortlisted for the same award.
The two business owners made contact to congratulate one another after being announced as finalists at the 2021 Great British Entrepreneur Awards, where both were nominated for Scotland’s Food & Drink Entrepreneur of the Year.
From there it became clear that Gregor’s operational experience and e-commerce background could help Savora Drinks overcome the same challenges he had faced whilst also giving him the chance to make his move into the tequila space.
Gregor said: “The tequila market is thriving at the moment and I’ve been keen to get involved for some time. During my own company’s cocktail classes, tequila drinks have proven to be surprisingly popular with many guests relaying that they would have never considered having it with a mixer.”
“Meeting Matthew made it clear that now was the right time to tap into this and doing so with Savora Drinks was the best way; he’s highly motivated and has developed a fantastic product, but I could see that my operational and marketing input would take it to the next level. Similarly, I’m learning a lot from Matthew and the team in areas that I’m inexperienced in.”
“It can be a little isolating going it alone as a startup entrepreneur, especially as neither of us worked within the food & drink sphere before setting up our ventures, so the award nomination was a fantastic opportunity to network and meet others doing similar things to us.”
“It proves the value of connecting with industry peers as I’ve both got the chance to work with an exciting, up-and-coming brand and gain valuable insight that I can apply to my own brand too.”
Co-founder of Savora Drinks Matthew Walker said: “The brand has had some great successes since our first mixer launched in April 2021, but we’re really optimistic that Gregor’s experience and enthusiasm will push us to unlock new potential and see real growth.”
“The tequila mixer market is small, meaning part of the challenge is generating awareness that tequila can even be drunk this way. This is where Gregor’s expertise lies and it’s part of the reason we feel his involvement will give us a boost. Given his success leading Boozy Events, he’s a great asset to have on board and we truly look forward to seeing what the future holds under this new partnership.”
