Owners Steven and Lucy Castle cite building sale and industry pressures.

Aberdeen restaurant The Braided Fig has ceased trading, with owners Steven and Lucy Castle concluding their nine-year tenure at the Summer Street venue. The restaurant served its final meals on Sunday 27 September.

Announcing the closure on social media, the owners explained their difficult decision to end their lease followed the building being put up for sale. This factor, combined with wider pressures facing hospitality businesses, rendered continued operation of The Braided Fig impossible.

In a statement, the restaurant confirmed: “With very heavy hearts, we’re sharing that after nine years, Steven and Lucy have made the difficult decision to end their lease following the building being put up for sale. Alongside the many challenges faced by the hospitality industry, this has meant that sadly, continuing The Braided Fig is no longer possible.”

The owners extended their gratitude to customers, employees, and family members who supported the business throughout its operation. They stated: “To every customer who has supported us, our incredible team members past and present, and our friends and family who have supported us throughout the years — thank you. We truly couldn’t have done it without you, and we’ll always be grateful for the memories.”

The Braided Fig originally opened in 2003, with Steven and Lucy Castle taking ownership of the city-centre restaurant in 2017. During their time, the venue became known for its relaxed dining experience, popular Sunday roasts, and menus featuring locally sourced produce. It also hosted private functions and regular events, establishing itself as a familiar part of Aberdeen’s hospitality scene.

Ahead of its final service, the owners invited customers for one last visit to “share some good food and raise a glass together.” Their farewell message concluded: “Thank you for nine amazing years.”
