A WINE enthusiast from Aberdeen is raising a glass to her new wine school which opens this autumn.
Anna Ferrier is launching Aberdeen Local Wine School and will host regular in-person wine tastings and courses to those keen to learn more about wine.
The first event, an Introduction to wine tasting, will take place on Thursday 8 September at the Bio Café in Aberdeen. Customers will have the opportunity to taste six different wines and learn about the main grape varieties, wine producing countries and basic tasting techniques.
Anna will subsequently be hosting an Introduction to wine with lunch on Saturday 24 September at the Malmaison in Aberdeen; a Wine and cheese tasting on Thursday 29 September and Champagne and sparkling wine on Friday 1 October at the Bio Café. The school will extend to other towns in Aberdeenshire in the coming months.

Anna brings with her a wealth of experience following her role as store manager for Majestic Wine in Aberdeen where she ran tastings for customers and became a Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Certified Educator and passed her Level 4 Diploma in Wines.
Whilst working at Majestic, Anna developed a great love and passion for all things wine and quickly realised that she enjoyed sharing her knowledge with other people during the tastings.
Whilst searching online she discovered a company called Local Wine School (www.localwineschool.com) – a network of more than 27 wine school franchisees in the UK – and enquired about opening a wine school in Aberdeen. Anna will now benefit from being an independently-owned business whilst becoming part of the UKs leading wine education network. She hopes to soon become the number one destination for wine tastings in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.
She said: “I look forward to bringing fun and informal wine tasting events to the city of Aberdeen, welcoming people from all backgrounds whatever their knowledge of wine may be. As a WSET Certified Educator I am also keen to offer WSET qualifications to eager enthusiasts as well as professionals who would like to further their careers within the industry.”
Chris Powell, owner of the Local Wine School, added: “We are delighted to welcome Anna as the new franchisee for Aberdeen. Her experience, knowledge and passion for wine makes her an ideal candidate to run wine classes and courses, and we are looking forward to helping Anna grow a very successful business.”
Originally from Germany, Anna moved to Scotland in 2010 to complete her bachelor’s degree in English Literature at the University of Stirling and then continued to do a master’s degree at the University of Edinburgh.
In her spare time, Anna enjoys making her own sour dough bread every week and baking cakes for special occasions, as well as tasting wine. In particular, she loves richer styles of Champagne like Bollinger and oaked Chardonnays, whilst her top wine choice is Orin Swift Abstract – a big, luscious, and powerful red wine with lots of personality.
