Aberdeen’s award-winning wine bar and retail destination, SugarBird Wines, is set to welcome acclaimed South African winemaker Helgard van Schalkwyk to the city this June, as part of its popular Meet the Winemaker event series.

Travelling from Nitida Wine Farms in Cape Town, Helgard will host two exclusive events, offering guests the opportunity to explore the producer’s celebrated portfolio while gaining insight into his nearly two-decade career in winemaking.

The first event takes place on 17 June at SugarBird in the Gardens, an intimate, destination-style venue in the heart of Aberdeen. Guests will be guided through a curated tasting of Nitida wines, with Helgard sharing details of the estate’s minimal intervention approach and the vibrant, expressive styles that define its range.

The following evening, SugarBird Union Grove will host a more informal Nitida Wines bar takeover. The free-to-attend event will see Helgard pouring a selection of his favourite wines, alongside sharing stories from his experience working within South Africa’s dynamic wine industry.

Helgard’s visit marks the latest in a series of international winemaker appearances curated by SugarBird Wines, which has built a strong reputation for bringing global producers directly to Aberdeen audiences.

Ruth Grahame, Sales, Marketing & Creative Director at SugarBird Wines, said: “Nitida Wine Farms is one of our favourites to visit when in Cape Town, so we’re over the moon to be welcoming Helgard to our beautiful city. As their exclusive Scottish importer, we have worked closely with the team at Nitida for many years now and we’re always excited to see what the new vintage reveals.

“Wine tastings have garnered a reputation for being intimidating spaces, but at SugarBird Wines, this couldn’t be further from the truth. We’re proud of the approachable atmosphere we’ve curated through our calendar of events, which bridge expert knowledge from the industry’s finest winemakers with a safe space for curiosity and new experiences.”

Bookings for the hosted tasting on 17 June are available via the SugarBird Wines website.
