Chivas Regal Blends Motorsport and Chess in Experiential Launch of Charles Leclerc’s Signature Whisky
Luxury Scotch brand harnesses celebrity power and immersive marketing to captivate next-generation consumers with limited-edition 16-year-old expression.
Luxury Scotch whisky brand Chivas Regal, part of the Pernod Ricard portfolio, recently orchestrated a high-profile experiential event ahead of the Italian Grand Prix, bringing together the worlds of elite motorsport and strategic chess. The “Chivas Regal Arena of Mastery” saw Formula 1 driver Charles Leclerc, Global Brand Ambassador for Chivas Regal, compete in a bespoke chess-inspired game named SE!ZE against five-time U.S. Chess Champion and Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura. This unique activation served to launch Chivas Regal 16 Year Old, Leclerc’s co-created whisky, marking a significant step in the brand’s engagement with diverse, often younger, demographics.
The event underscores a broader trend within the spirits industry, where celebrity endorsements and immersive marketing strategies are increasingly leveraged to boost brand visibility and foster deeper consumer connections. These initiatives aim to create memorable “memory spaces” rather than merely vying for shelf presence. In 2023, celebrity-backed whiskies notably outpaced the overall whisky category in volume growth, expanding by 8% compared to the category’s 2%.
The showdown pitted Leclerc, renowned for his precision on the racetrack with Scuderia Ferrari HP, against Nakamura, a chess prodigy who achieved his Grandmaster title at just 15, becoming the youngest American at the time to do so. Nakamura is also celebrated as a prominent online chess personality, credited with significantly expanding the popularity of online chess. The game SE!ZE, conceived by Leclerc, was designed around the principle that “every move matters,” reflecting a shared ethos with the whisky itself. The digital release of the SE!ZE game is anticipated later this year.
The new Chivas Regal 16 Year Old represents a distinctive offering as the brand’s first 16-year-old expression and a limited-edition blended Scotch whisky. Co-created by Leclerc and former Chivas Regal Master Blender Sandy Hyslop, the blend features 16 exceptional whiskies, each matured for a minimum of 16 years. A core component is the Longmorn Single Malt, chosen personally by Leclerc during a visit to Scotland and matured in sherry casks. Longmorn, a Speyside distillery, is known for producing a sweet, fruity spirit with good body, making it particularly suitable for sherry cask maturation. The number 16 holds personal resonance for Leclerc, signifying both his racing number and his birth date.
Reflecting on the unique challenge, Charles Leclerc stated: “I’ve faced plenty of challenges in my career, but stepping into the Chivas Regal Arena of Mastery was something entirely different. The crowd, the arena, facing Hikaru, the energy was electric. SE!ZE and Chivas Regal 16 are built on the same idea: that every choice matters and nothing happens by accident. Facing one of the greatest strategic minds in the world at my own game brought that to life in a way I hadn’t anticipated. That’s what Chivas Regal and I are always pushing towards: moments that test you in ways you don’t expect.”

Chess Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura also commented on the event: “I’ve competed in front of big crowds before, but nothing quite like that. Charles and Chivas Regal built a game that keeps you on edge from the first move: fast, precise, with no margin for error and where every decision matters. That’s the kind of challenge that reveals what you’re really made of. True mastery isn’t just about knowing the game, it’s about how you handle the pressure when it counts.”
This initiative aligns with Pernod Ricard’s premiumisation strategy and Chivas Regal’s “I Rise, We Rise” communication platform, which champions modern values of success, togetherness, and collaboration. The brand has increasingly aimed to appeal to a younger demographic, often referred to as the “hustle generation,” comprising Gen Z and young millennials who seek status-driven spirits and meaningful brand experiences. Chivas Regal appointed Leclerc as its Global Brand Ambassador in March 2025, a multi-year partnership that also sees the brand as an official team partner of his Scuderia Ferrari HP Formula One team. Leclerc, a self-taught pianist and composer, embodies a “blended” set of passions that resonates with Chivas Regal’s narrative of diverse paths to success and a modern interpretation of luxury.
The Chivas Regal 16 Year Old is available at a recommended retail price (RRP) of £64.00. As an alcohol brand, Chivas Regal consistently advocates for responsible consumption, advising consumers to enjoy its products responsibly and never drink and drive.
