The historic Elm Row pub, which has been serving locals since the late 1800s, is getting a major revamp this summer. The building is Category A listed and was designed by William Henry Playfair, so the plan is to polish it up rather than rip it apart.
Star Pubs, part of Heineken, is funding the investment and has brought in Edinburgh‑born local and long‑time regular Paul Henderson to run the place once the work is done. Henderson already knows Joseph Pearce well from the other side of the bar, which should help keep the community feel intact.
On the outside, the team will refresh the frontage while keeping the pub’s distinctive windows and familiar Joseph Pearce branding. The outdoor area is getting new furniture, café‑style barriers and more greenery to make it a better spot for a pint in the sun.
Scottish operations director Matt Dyson said, “We’re delighted to be investing in such a prominent, well-known pub. It will give it a new lease of life.” The aim is to have it all back open in time for the busy summer and festival trade.
Inside, the revamp will refresh the trading space but keep signature features like the original bar. A lounge‑style dining area at the back will double as a cosy spot for private parties and local get‑togethers.
The kitchen is being completely refitted to support a stronger food offer. When Joseph Pearce reopens, expect relaxed, casual dishes – think gourmet sandwiches, gyros, small plates and burgers – built for sharing over drinks.

For new operator Paul Henderson, taking on the pub feels like coming home. “I’d loved working in hospitality in my younger years,” he said. “When I saw a big refurbishment was planned for Joseph Pearce and that a new operator was required, it felt like a calling and that the stars had aligned.”
He added, “It’s a fantastic pub with a loyal following of regulars and loads of potential that the investment will bring out. It’s incredibly exciting that it’s getting the TLC it needs – not least for the community around it, as many local residents use the pub.”
