New spirit created from cheese by-product available from October 27

Isle of Mull Cheese has announced the launch of its Hebridean Cream Liqueur, a new spirit created and bottled at the family-run Sgriob-ruadh Dairy Farm and Distillery on the Isle of Mull. The waiting list for the liqueur opened on Tuesday, October 13, with purchases available from Tuesday, October 27. Bottled at 17% ABV, the 50cl release has an RRP of £29.99.

The Hebridean Cream Liqueur is made using an aged spirit produced from the whey by-product of the farm’s cheese production. This ‘whey-ski’ is then combined with cream from the farm’s milk and aged with oak. The resulting liqueur offers notes of caramel, toasted nuts, vanilla, and cocoa, and is suggested to be served over ice or in festive coffees, white russians, or flat white martinis.

Lily Reade, granddaughter of Isle of Mull Cheese founder Chris Reade, is behind the new limited-edition release. As a member of the third generation of the Reade family who own and operate Sgriob-ruadh Dairy Farm and Distillery, she explained the ethos behind the product. “I’ve grown up watching my family make something from whatever the farm and the island gives us. Whether it was milk from the cows or rhubarb from the plentiful patches growing on the land, very little went to waste – there was always an idea to turn it into something we could eat, drink or share with others. This ethos extends to the production processes we use, fully powered by sustainable energy created using island resources,” Reade said.

Reade continued, stating: “That way of thinking has always stayed with me, so in partnership with my family we created Isle of Mull Hebridean Cream Liqueur, a product which brings together so many parts of what we do here. It uses the whey left from our cheesemaking to create the spirit, which is then blended with cream from our cows, bringing together so many areas of our expertise to create a liqueur we believe will appeal to people across the world.”

The ceramic bottle for the Hebridean Cream Liqueur features unique prints crafted from materials gathered at Sgriob-ruadh, including hair from the farm’s cows, leaves, and foliage. These elements were raku-fired onto tiles to create the textures and markings for the bottle’s design, which aims to reflect the farm, its animals, and the surrounding landscape.

The launch quantity is limited to 600 bottles, available on a first-come, first-served basis. The first 100 bottles purchased will include a homemade gift bag, crafted on the farm by Lily’s gran, Chris. The liqueur will be available for purchase online and at the Isle of Mull Cheese Glass Barn Farm Shop.

This release marks a new development for the family business, which began 46 years ago when Chris Reade established the farm. The business has since grown to become a producer of Isle of Mull cheese.
