Scotland’s first and oldest licensed whisky distillery site is set to be auctioned this week, presenting a rare roadside development opportunity in West Dunbartonshire.
On the instructions of the King’s and Lord Treasurer’s Remembrancer, the former Littlemill Distillery site in Bowling will go under the hammer at Shepherd Commercial Property Auctions on Thursday 18 June at 2.30pm, with a guide price of £110,000.
Littlemill distillery, a Lowland single malt Scotch whisky producer, holds a significant place in Scotland’s whisky heritage. Located around 11 miles west of Glasgow, the site benefits from strong transport connections, with Great Western Road providing direct access to Glasgow city centre, the west coast and the M8 motorway. Bowling train station is also within walking distance, offering regular services to Glasgow Queen Street and beyond.
The surrounding area is predominantly residential, with a number of established hospitality and commercial operators nearby, including The Bay Inn, Custom House Hotel and the five-star Mar Hall Golf Course and Spa Resort.
Adam Honeyman, partner at Shepherd, said: “The 1.2-acre site comprises a rectangular plot of land with frontage onto Dumbarton Road, consisting mainly of rough ground with sparse tree coverage.

“The north side of the site borders a public cycle and hiking path before reaching Great Western Road, while residential properties surround the site on the east and west sides.”
A derelict building located in the south-east corner of the site is currently Category B listed, adding both heritage interest and potential planning considerations. The site is zoned as an existing residential area under the West Dunbartonshire Local Development Plan, indicating potential for redevelopment subject to the necessary consents.
The auction will take place online, with interested parties invited to register via the Shepherd Commercial Property Auctions website ahead of the sale.
